Phase 2 of our workplace wellbeing trial is now firmly underway. We are currently mid-way through our second week of compressed working hours and have seen a mixed bag of results. However, there remains a lot of excitement and enthusiasm from all staff to get the most accurate results.
Most employees have enjoyed phase 2 so far, especially because they are able to leave at their new specified time. However, there have been a couple of exceptions where an individual has stayed for an extra hour to ensure that their day’s work was finished.
Unfortunately, this includes the team managers and directors. Due to an unforeseen event that needed to be addressed and resolved promptly, they haven’t been able to reduce their hours in any significant way.
Despite this slight hiccup, the team appear to have taken full advantage of this opportunity by putting in extra effort so that they can be as productive as possible in a shorter amount of time. The positives to have come out phase 2 of the trial so far include:
Although it hasn’t been ideal that some of the team are yet to fully engage with the compressed hours, it has provided a good test to see how these hours might work during busy times.
The trial has allowed flexibility for the company to remain as productive as possible as it recognises those who have finished their work and allows them to leave earlier – they are no longer forced by their contract to sit and do nothing until 17:30. The team at Century are fully aware of this and their overall enthusiasm is a testament to the commitment and genuine love they all have for Century Office.
It’s fair to say that the first week has been an eye-opener; it has given us the confidence that although reducing hours by 20% is optimistic, there is lee-way for staff to have the opportunity to leave earlier when possible without detrimentally affecting productivity levels.
Now that things have settled down, we hope that the next few weeks will start to show the real benefits of the trial and that we will gain a greater insight into how such a practise might continue to work for us going forward.
